Hello fellow Midsouth Bears! I hope you are all crushing. I hope to get your input on some things. Shortly after forming the group, I received interest from some members in having a Midsouth Bears meet-up. This was before the Coronu plandemic.
Some states are at risk of lockdown 2.0, but fortunately, the states of Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee seem less prone to draconian measures than most. I believe the time may be right late this summer for a meet-up. Bears aren't given to a sense of fear, and state populations are growing tired of this imposed mess.
The first order of business would be to determine if y'all are interested in a meet-up. If so, are you willing to plan one in the current time of uncertainty. I believe if we act before Fall, a meeting is likely to be relatively easy.
If we meet, I would like input as to where a good meeting place would be. I can think of two modes of thinking about this. One mode is the idea of trying to meet as equidistantly as possible to avoid putting anyone out too much with travel. The majority of the Midsouth Bear population seems to be centered around St. Louis and Memphis. The town equidistant between the two is Sikeston, MO (an alternative city would be Cape Girardeau, MO).
The other mode is to do a tour of different bear cities. Have a meeting in Memphis, one in St. Louis, maybe one in Arkansas. This will mean longer travel if you are not in one of these cities, but shorter travel if you are. A rotation would ensure fairness.
Please reply with your thoughts and ideas. The more of us can participate, the better a meet-up would be. The more we would enjoy it. But wherever two or more bears are gathered, fun and crushing will surely occur! Thank you all.
Arkie, I'm down for the Mid South Meetup! Sikeston or Cape Girardeau seem like fair spots to me, but I guess ultimately, the choice will reside on who is willing to make the drive there. Honestly, I'd hop on the bike and ride to where ever the meet up is, even Memphis. So we need some more honest input from other interested bears.
Other ideas off the top of my head, a public BBQ at a state park, so people who have a long drive can opt for camping overnight. Also just a good outdoors-summer kind of vibe. We could get a hike going, frisbee, corn hole, etc.
Also, if the feed back here is low, we could do a small meet up at Lambert's in Sikeston. Awesome homestyle food, and right off of I-55 for convenience. That hits the midway sweet spot too.
Just throwing stuff out there. Cheers!
I am so late to this party. I suck at using more than 2 social medias at a time. Gonna get better I swear!
I agree Memphis is probably going to be a problem with masks. Although if we did meet up somewhere with a large group, it would be funny to see how they would respond.
Would somewhere like Oxford or Southhaven, MS be better? Or would people prefer somewhere north of Memphis?
Memphis likely allows us the most places to go. Does anyone who live in Memphis have insight into what it is like for going out downtown atm?
Let's say Wolf River Brisket Co on Goodman Road in Olivebranch. They have a private party room and they weren't ridiculous about the mask when my wife and I went back in August. Most customers didn't wear one. As for the date, which would work better for everyone, Saturday December 5th? Or Saturday December 12th?
I'm not opposed to a Sunday but those that plan on driving a long ways may not want to drive back on a Sunday night, Monday morning, whatever.
Thanks Mark! I hope you can make the drive!
My wife is due on the 11th, so the 5th would probably be perfect!
